Viewpoints with trees: The Clown In Nature Class

Sundays 2-5 pm

In Viewpoints and clown, we work with every impetus, every person, every object in the room: proposing, receiving, playing.  What if we were to have this conversation in nature?  What changes?  At what pace do we receive and play?  We will find out together!  A strong foundation in Viewpoints will be established, expanded a la Open Canvas (Pig Iron Theatre’s technique) and then brought with a Clown’s level of play to hillsides and ponds.  Sessions on foraging and animal tracking will deepen our ability to listen and relate to the land.  The class climaxes in an improvised group performance on a hillside, open to the public.

Childcare is offered during class time; kids will have a complementary course offering in the same area as our classes by 20-year teacher Milena Bice.  Please feel free to join and bring your kids.

This class can serve curiosities towards:
​

  • How can I play with others as a collective?  

  • How can I build a collective?

  • How can I play more deeply with our more-than-human kin?

  • How can I expand my methodologies for working with actors?

  • How can I make films without scripts?

  • How can I nurture my inner artist and child in this challenging time in the entertainment business?

  • How can I deepen my relationship to myself?

  • How can I deepen my attunement to nature and the divine?

  • What are the creative acts of the land, and how can I open my awareness to those?

Class cost: $675, and approximately six classes will take place at Kenneth Hahn Park, which charges a $10/car fee to enter.

Some reduced rates and scholarships available; please note needs in your application. This course will be taught by Josephine Decker and features guest workshops from local tracking and foraging experts.

The Student Teacher

Do you miss being in a space of learning all the time?  Are you interested in sooo many things?  Do you have a specific subject you wish you could go deep with and geek out about with others?  Do you wish you were part of a curious collective of peers investigating the world and the world of ideas together?
 
Join us!  Inspired by Black Mountain College’s dissolving of the divide between student and teacher, we will all teach this class. 
 
You will teach and/or lead a discussion for approximately 10-30 minutes (longer or shorter possible) every 3-4 weeks. We will all bring our lunches and eat together as we learn and discuss.
 
Seeking students and teachers in philosophy, science, ecology, math, physics, dance, film, history, botany, art history, plant medicine, English, any subject under the sun!  Share your passion with a group and receive theirs as well. 
 
Meets weekly from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Tuesdays.  Half the classes will meet indoors, and half the classes will be outdoor picnics to take advantage of learning botany, foraging, and other skills on our feet in nature.  
 
To facilitate meeting during the work day, the space we meet in will be offered for one hour before class for quiet shared work time.  

Costs for this course:

  • $100 fee.  

  • Approximately four sessions will be held at Kenneth Hahn, which has a $10/car fee to enter (you will pay that on your own).
